Case Study: Set a bold strategy

Coaching an NHS Strategy Director (and other Board members) to lead the design and build of a new hospital, for a future that doesn’t yet exist.

Client: NHS

Challenge

The Strategy Director of a hospital trust was new in role, and tasked with leading the design and build of a brand new hospital. Meanwhile, half of his Board peers were also new in role. His own team wasn’t yet fully resourced to deliver the project. And there were some big changes going on at home too.

How to stay calm, strategic and focused, in this high-stakes, fast-paced, and fast-changing environment – to deliver a new hospital, on time?

Solution

From 2018 to present, we’ve been supporting this client with a combination of Exec Coaching, Team Coaching, and coaching-style research.

Exec Coaching supported questions like:

  • How to build an effective team – and deepen the relationships after a year of virtual working?
  • How to ensure attention to detail, while keeping an eye on the big picture?
  • How to stay healthy and calm, making clear decisions, in a fast-moving and high-stress environment?
  • How to get the best from each relationship with Board peers and NEDs?
  • What to do at major forks in the road?
  • How to thrive at home and work, when there is so much going on in both?

We also designed and facilitated coaching-style research groups with patients, staff, and stakeholders. Using images and stimulus, we explored how patients and staff want to feel in the new building. We listened for changing views of healthcare, and how that translated into hospital design and architectural features. We presented our findings to the trust’s Board, and to the appointed architects, with great feedback.

‘Elle is a fantastic, skillful, and insightful coach, and has helped me through some tough times and big decisions.’

‘An excellent piece of work. Really pleasing to see not just aspirations, but also real solutions and options for the Design Team to develop.’

‘Really enjoyed this. Informative and good engagement.’

We coach leaders to navigate change with confidence and calm.
