This broken and beautiful world

Monday, March 16th, 2020

Sometimes loss closes in, and frightening events press in on our world. At a personal level, we may face job cubs, redundancies, illness, cancer diagnoses, the loss of loved ones. And in the collective picture, bushfires, tsunamis, terror attacks, wars, a global pandemic.

In these moments, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with fear and despair. Will I lose my job? My home?  My loved ones? Will we find our way through these challenging times? Can we change, fast enough? These are big questions, and they do not have answers.

There is so much broken in the world. People living in crushing poverty. Plastic in the ocean. Rainforests destroyed, to grow crops. Fertiliser killing the shimmering beauty of coral reefs. Animals becoming extinct. It’s hard to take it all in.

But there is beauty too.

The sun rises, every day, sharing its warmth, filling our world with colour. Trees spread up to the sky, their leaves unfurling towards the sun, then trustingly transforming into a riot of colour as they fall away once more. Flowers bud and bloom. Mountains stand guard, silent, strong, listening. There are tree trunks to lean against, to touch, to find ground. Wherever we are, we can find earth under our feet. And we can love it.

Yes, there will be difficult times. Yes, we need to change, and grow, and evolve as a species. And yes, at times that is overwhelming.

Amid it all, look for the beauty. Lean into that, as if your life depends on it.

Start today. Even for just a moment, pause your busy day, look up to the sky, feel your feel on the earth.

Let yourself LOVE this precious and beautiful world. And let your love inform your choices. What do you buy? How much do you travel? What conversations do you start? How do you raise your kids?

Above all, remember, you belong here. We are creative, resourceful and whole, and together can find our way through these challenging times. There is brokenness, yes, but there is beauty too. SO MUCH beauty. Let it soften you. Let it show you the way.
